About Me:
Hi, I’m Roxy
I’m a 1.5-year-old Boerboel girl, and my story is a tough one to tell, but it’s also a story of hope.
A few months ago, I was rescued by Special Paws Sanctuary after being posted in a “free to good home” group. In the video that caught my rescue mommy’s attention, I was chained to a tree with a thick, heavy chain. That tree was my world… and my prison.
Every time a human would walk by, I’d get excited and try to run to them, hoping for love… but all I got was pain. The chain would yank at my throat, and I slowly began to believe that humans meant hurt.
One day, everything changed, even though I didn’t know it at the time. My rescue mommy sent her own mom to fetch me. I was terrified. I didn’t know they were there to help me. I bit out of fear. The next day, rescue mommy herself came. She gave me medication to calm me down, gently helped me into safety, and took me home.
It took time. Months, actually. She gained my trust with patience, love, and (okay, yes) a lot of treats. For a while, she was the only human I let near me. When I got scared and lashed out, she never punished me, she just held space for me, reminded me I was safe, and waited.
Today, I roam freely with my doggy friends. I play. I sunbathe. I cuddle my mommy. But I still have my fears. I’m still reactive to strangers, and I still need time and space to feel safe.
Because of that, I’m not up for adoption right now, maybe not ever. And that’s okay. Rescue mommy promised I can stay as long as I need, even if that means forever, so that I can continue healing at my own pace.
If you’d like to support my journey, mommy and I would be so grateful for anyone willing to contribute toward my monthly care. You can donate below or contact Special Paws Sanctuary directly for more info.
Thank you for reading my story.
With love,
Roxy
